Star-Tribune article: Stockton flood: A blessing in a very wet disguise
Woodbury Lutheran is again taking the lead on a project to provide flood relief in SE Minnesota. First a progress update: With the presence of Camp St. Mark and housing for relief teams, work is moving quite nicely in Rushford. Nearly all of the 371 homes on the Lutheran Disaster Relief initial worklist are completed. However, it is expected the list will begin to grow again as the weather warms up. Work has moved much more slowly through the winter in Stockton and Minnesota City, with significant needs recently identified in nearby Elba. In addition, cleanup crews (great for youth) are needed to help with Whitewater State Park.
The Lutheran Church Missouri Minnesota flood relief project will be in mid-April. Depending on people resources, we are planning to work in (priority order) Stockton, Minnesota City/Elba and Rushford. Housing accommodations will be available in Winona and Rushford to serve all three locations.
In addition, two one-day service projects will help Winona County disaster relief organizations gather more information on needs in that county. Survey days will be held in Stockon on Saturday, March 15, and in Minnesota City/Elba on Saturday, March 29. We will go door-to-door to damaged homes, interviewing home owners to determine their need for additional labor, assisting with job estimates, and/or surveying financial and spiritual needs.
Work includes clean outs, insulating, sheetrocking, painting, floor installation, roofing and siding, and general carpentry. Skilled and unskilled workers welcome! Register your skill level below and we will contact you with details.
To wear: Long pants, workboots or heavy soled tennis shoes, white socks, layers of shirts, hat. Bring a change of clothing, extra white socks, rubber gloves, leather work gloves, safety goggles if you have them. Please bring tools you own to equip yourself for the work for which you are qualified. Some general tools are available for workers in Rushford.
To get there: When we have several participants, we will help you arrange carpools. Minnesota City and Stockton are approximately 2 hours from the Twin Cities; Rushford is about 2½ hours.
Please mark your tools!
Individuals or small groups may register for a day, or may stay for several days or weeks at Camp St. Mark in Rushford.
Except for the week of April 14, we cannot guarantee availability of beds for overnight team stays so we recommend you select more than one date. Individual beds are nearly always open. Men and women welcome; couples may be separated, depending on availability. Meals, bunks and snacks are available.
Donations needed: Menards, Home Depot and Lowes gift cards in $25/50 amounts.
