Dr. Mike Barnett, Senior Pastor of First Baptist, Ocean Springs, our host church in Mississippi, visited Woodbury August 8-10, 2006. At an August 10 All Teams Celebration, on behalf of Mayor Connie Moran of Ocean Springs, he presented Woodbury Lutheran with a key to the City of Ocean Springs in recognition of the work done by Katrina Hope teams. Dr. Mike also presented a key to Mayor Bill Hargis and the City Council at their August 9 meeting, recognizing the work of Woodbury Lutheran-sponsored Katrina Hope Teams and donations from the city's residents.

During Dr. Mike's visit, he was interviewed live on Twin Cities' KKMS 980 AM radio Live with Jeff and Lee (3-6 p.m. daily). Listen to Dr. Mike's interview. He has some amazing stories to share.

We are very grateful for the relationship that has developed between Katrina Hope and our good friends in Ocean Springs. Stop by the mission board case to see our key! To God be the glory for this wonderful honor!

The efforts of our teams were mentioned in a recent FEMA press release, which refers to Miss Sadie (a woman helped by seven of our teams). Read it here.

New teams are forming for this fall as Rebuilding Hope, Phase 2 of hurricane recovery mission, begins. Youth 16 and over and adults are invited to join teams that will concentrate on building projects and rebuilding. Especially needed are team leaders with building trades experience. Cost will again be about $100/person donation. Teams will carpool and stay either at First Baptist or at Lutheran Disaster Response in Ocean Springs.

More than 400 Katrina Hope volunteers have traveled a million miles to and from Ocean Springs. Collectively, they have donated more than 12,000 hours of labor, or the equivalent of six years for one full-time worker! To God be the glory for their sacrifice and for the hope they have brought to the people of Ocean Springs and Biloxi.

The only items we are accepting are handmade fall or queen size quilts to be given as homeowner gifts.

Thanks to you all for your generosity. It has been overwhelming!

Why are we doing this?

A brush with a hurricane and family ties to the area are part of the reason. Read more...

Also, listen to Real Life with Kim Jeffries from September 9 as she talks to our Youth Minister Derek Broten, who was in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. Derek was given a burden to somehow take part in the relief effort after he was successful in leaving after the flooding. Thanks to Kim Jeffries and KTIS AM900!

Listen to a radio interview with Rick Gibbs (Team 1 and 6) from Ocean Springs on WOSM radio.

Our first truck full of donations, shipping donated by Q Carrier of Shakopee, left Tuesday, September 20, 2006 for Ocean Springs.

The truck was sent to Ocean Springs in prayer
by staff and members of Woodbury Lutheran and St. John Lutheran.

Press Coverage

We have received a generous amount of coverage from the local press. In fact, the St. Paul Pioneer Press actually sent a reporter and photographer with the group that left on September 13. We thank the local press for their coverage.
