Required Modules

The required modules cover all the key teachings of our Confirmation program. They can be taken at any time with the exception of the Alpha/Testimony module, which can only be taken in the third year. Each Foundations student must complete every required module. A brief description of each course can be found below.

Required Course Descriptions

Foundation Introduction 101F (1 time Meeting) (With Parent)

In this meeting (“Intro to Junior High” or a face to face meeting) the Foundations curriculum will be explored and students along with their families are invited to prayerfully consider the prospect of the Foundations process. It is necessary to have completed this Introduction in order to register for classes.

God’s Relationship With Us 102 (5 Weeks)

Students will explore commandments 1-3 dealing with our relationship and response to God. What does it mean to have a relationship with Christ? How do we worship Him? How do we keep His name Holy?

Memorization: Commandments 1-3 and meanings

Creation: The Big Bang Theory 103 (5 Weeks)

Students learn and study the 1st Article of the Apostles’ Creed dealing with theories of creation, existence of God, worldviews of God and appreciation of creation.

Memorization: 1st Article & meaning

Holy Spirit and Life Everlasting 104 (5 Weeks)

Students explore the 3rd Article of the Apostles’ Creed and the Office of the Keys, looking at such issues as who the Holy Spirit is and what His presence is in our lives, what the Great Commission is and how that applies to us. We will also look at Revelations, resurrection, end times, judgment day, heaven and hell, and other world views.

Memorization: 3rd Article and meaning and Matthew 28:19-20

Biblical Themes 105 (5 Weeks)

Students examine the Patriarchs, Wisdom Literature and the Major and Minor Prophets, Gospels, and the Epistles. We will use the theme of sin-judgment-grace and Covenant and weave in biblical examples of our faith journey.

Memorization: Books of the Old and New Testament

Baptism: Claimed by Christ 107 (5 Weeks)

Students learn the importance of baptism, forms of baptism, how baptism is connected to Confirmation, what the Bible says about when to baptize and how Baptism is used.

Memorization: Luther’s explanation of Baptism from the Catechism

Marriage and Sexuality 108 (5 Weeks)

Students explore issues such as God’s Word on marriage, the role of sex in marriage, abstinence, sexual promiscuity, adultery, pornography, and dating.

Memorization: Commandment 6 and meaning

To Be or Not To Be 109 (5 Weeks)

Students and facilitators will discuss issues like murder, abortion, euthanasia, eating disorders, capital punishment, suicide, salvation, and death.

Memorization: Commandment 5 and meaning

Our Relationship with Others 110F (5 Weeks) (Family Course)

Students and parents explore issues of authority and relationships with parents, friends, neighbors and everyone they come in contact with.

Memorization: Commandments 4 and 8 with meanings

Note: This class is for both student and his/her parent(s) and/or guardian. At least one parent or guardian must attend all sessions.

Stewardship 111F (5 Weeks) (Family Course)
(Can also be taken as an independent course, see Stewardship I311F)

Students and parents discuss what God has given us and others, and our response to those gifts.

Memorization: Commandments 7, 9 & 10 with meanings

Note: This class is for both student and his/her parent(s) and/or guardian. At least one parent or guardian must attend all sessions.

Lord’s Supper 112 (5 Weeks) (Family Course)

Many students complete this course in 6th grade at Woodbury Lutheran. If you have not completed this course yet you will need to sign up to receive an Independent study packet or contact Jane Dibbern to participate in the class for the 8 weeks prior to Holy week.

Prayer 113 (5 Weeks)

Students will explore prayer and spiritual disciplines in daily life. What is the importance of prayer? How does one pray? What are the benefits of prayer & a devotional life? A substantial amount of time is focused on the Lord’s Prayer.

Alpha/Testimony Course 513 (13 weeks - 2 sessions+)
(Third Year Course)

This is one of the most meaningful classes we have in our program. Students review their Christian faith and address foundational questions while exploring the meaning of life. Questions include: Who is Jesus? Why did He die? Why read the Bible? Who is the Holy Spirit? How does God guide me? There is also a one evening retreat for this class that each student must attend to get credit for this course. Then each student will have an opportunity to share their testimony of God’s presence in their life.
