Kake Team: "The Time has come!"
The time has come! The team leaders have gone ahead, and the rest of us will follow to Kake, Alaska, on Tuesday. But travel is the easy part. We began our journey as a team almost six months ago. Why? How do a group of people, whose backgrounds, experience, and age vary so greatly, come together in this mission? What do we expect? What does God expect from us? What do the people of Kake expect of our visit? We learned, from those who have visited the people of Kake before, about the place, the history, and the culture of the Tlingit people. Our mission is one of relationship: showing God’s love through loving others. We studied how we might approach fostering relationships and sharing the love of Christ using Joe Maschoff’s “Telling His Story by Telling Yours.” This was not easy! But knowing what God has done for us in the moments that matter most helps us open our hearts and minds to hear what others have to share. Some of us are comforted by planning, and planning we did! We will invite the men of Kake for breakfast and the ladies for a pampering spa night. The children will enjoy sports camp and VBS. Projects to improve the church and to help the community, food preparation, crafts, gifts, supplies, music and more have been on the minds of the planners. Pausing to note the faith others’ have in the able hands of planners, however, we are reminded that God has much more that this in store for us. We must plan to be unburdened and open to relationship building. So, we pack our bags with the things we will need for 12 days. We know the weather will be cool and maybe rainy. Jacket – check, socks – check, toiletries – check. But are we ready? What do we have to learn and offer? Are our hearts and minds packed? For this we will need God’s help. We have prepared, planned, and packed, and now we pray for guidance to follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit. We are called, each of us, to this mission of love for others. Thank you to the people of Woodbury Lutheran for your support and prayers for our journey!
