Kake Team Update: "The Mission is in Full Swing!"

main image

8/15/18

The mission is in full swing!  Even a newcomer to this mission can feel the richness of relationships formed and nurtured by our long-term commitment to this community.  The ladies and Pastor Joey prayed over and shared the love of Christ with a woman in great pain and fear last night.  Tears gave way to peacefulness even before she left with her husband for rest and a visit to the clinic.

The sanctuary project, while coming along well, is pressed for time and so all hands on deck!  Not deterred by some more tasks, freshening up the paint in the Sunday School room and hallway were added to the task list today.  A group went up to the senior home again today at noon for singing and fellowship.  VBS brings the children in the morning and many of them stick around all day.  Evening basketball at the community center is where you will find the younger men of our team, deepening their relationships with key community members.

The Wednesday Night Praise Worship Service was displaced to the fellowship hall due to ongoing construction in the sanctuary and Pastor Joey urged us to share the love of Christ with all.  Another day drew to a close with a team meeting reflecting on the progress we have made in our relationships and mission over 10 years visiting the people of Kake.  Whether our walls have dropped, theirs have, or both, we seem to be anticipated, welcomed, and valued as trusted friends even more this year than last.  Only through the repeated commitment of several team members could this perspective be noted.  New team members are welcomed easily as a result of the foundation laid by all those who have gone before us.

A reflection on Kake, Alaska, by Linda Pierre, first-time Kake Team member:

An island surrounded by the ocean, nestled along the water.  In the backdrop are the tall spruce going up the mountainside.  Hidden in the woods are wild animals and small creeks that run into the massive ocean.  You see from the shoreline a little island peeking out of the sky blue water.

The island has fishermen that go out for their catch and may not return for weeks.  Cruise lines shuttle their passengers by smaller transfer boats, cruising into the shoreline to watch the native dance shows, go for walks, and sightsee this beautiful island.

The children are delightful, entertaining themselves, and having fun with each other.  They ride bikes, go for walks and play many games.  The Tlingit are very strong.  They take care of each other with grace and love.  The stories that reach back into time from their ancestors tell of how they relied upon and lived off the land.  They have survived by knowing how to find all the food they need from berries to fish and many other resources.  Their culture is with Mother Nature and the amazing surroundings.  At times they have their trials that cast a shower of grief over the land and they rejoice in times of happiness.

Prayer requests:

Healing and Peace for all who suffer from pain and grief in Kake.
